Biography

AHN Chang Hong (b.1952) portrays the turbulent history of modern Korea based on the lives of anonymous individuals. Through the meticulous documentation of the modern era, AHN reveals the various tragedies of Korean history, such as the Japanese colonial period, the rapid growth of capitalism and its negative impact on South Korea, as well as the discord of an unjust society; ultimately exploring the existential concerns of life and death in his practice.

The artist was awarded “The 10th Lee In Sung Cultural Foundation Award” in 2009; “The 25th Lee Jung Seob Art Award” in 2013; and earlier achieved international recognition through his acceptance of the “Judge’s Special Award” in 1989 at the Cagne International Fine Art Competition (Cagne, France). His works are included in collections of major Korean art museums such as MMCA, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea); SeMA, Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea); and BMA, Busan Museum of Art (Busan, Korea).

 

He has held solo exhibitions at Arario Gallery Cheonan (Cheonan, Korea) in 2015; Perigee Gallery (Seoul, Korea) in 2014; Busan Museum of Art (Busan, Korea) in 2009; and Kumho Musem of Art (Seoul, Korea) in 1993, as well as taking part in notable group exhibitions at Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea) in 2011; Total Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea) in 2005; Gwangju Museum of Art (Gwangju, Korea) and Sungkok Art Museum (Seoul, Korea) in 1997; Hangaram Arts Center Museum (Seoul, Korea) in 1995; and MMCA, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea) in 1994.
