CHOI Byungso’s two works on view, “Untitled 021012” and “Untitled 0200815”, are part of a series that is recognized as the artist’s most representative body of work. In these works, the newspapers, which have been ruthlessly crumpled and torn along the grain, rise in flesh. As the forerunner of Korean experimental art, CHOI participated in Korea’s first contemporary art festival, “Daegu Contemporary Art Festival”, in 1974 and inaugurated the experimental art association “35/128” with various leading figures from the event. Driven by his critical consciousness towards reality, the artist selected the most common and cheap materials to create his works. The erased surface of newspapers, a symbolic object of repression, demonstrate his resistance against society.
