Endless Reproduction and Transformation… OK Seungcheol Questions the Meaning of the Original

Artist OK Seungcheol raises questions about originality, reproduction, and identity in the digital age.

Until the 26th of next month, OK will present his first solo exhibition, PROTOTYPE, at the Lotte Museum, operated by the Lotte Foundation for the Arts.

This inaugural solo show offers an opportunity to resolve long-standing curiosities such as, “Why does he draw characters with such similar expressions?” and “What are the overarching themes of his work?” Until now, interpretations of Ok’s art have often been reduced to simple labels—characters suited for subculture, or works with a Japanese aesthetic—without deeper understanding. Through this exhibition, visitors can see firsthand the contexts in which his images, widely circulated on social media and within subculture communities, were created and how their meanings have been transformed over time.
