LEE Eunsil, Surging Waves

Conceiving life and giving birth are often described as wondrous and beautiful acts, yet for those who live through them they can also be etched as experiences of fear and trauma. Childbirth may be intended or unintended, welcomed or denied. At the moment a new being arrives in the world, love and fear, pain and exhilaration surge forward all at once, inseparable from one another. LEE Eunsil visualises childbirth as a pure experience that exists prior to distinctions between good and bad, before meaning and value are assigned. The burdens placed on women, social scrutiny and pressure, pain and responsibility, and the discourse surrounding motherhood are left to follow as later interpretations.
