“A spontaneous overflow of an intensely powerful feeling captured on canvas is good painting to me,” Nalini Malani is quoted saying in the March 1966 issue of the now-defunct Indian women’s magazine Eve’s Weekly. Displayed in a vitrine close to the entrance to “The Fragility of Time,” a focused and revealing exhibition of Malani’s work from the mid-1960s through the early ’80s, this archival tidbit underscored the then-twenty-year-old artist’s self-assured approach to a time-tested practice.
