This year’s 23rd DongGang Photography Award winner, Won Seoung Won, has consistently presented highly refined digital “composite print” works, meticulously cutting and pasting countless individual photographs she has taken herself on a computer to construct single scenes drawn from memory or imagination.
The judges remarked, “Won Seoung Won’s work, which began in the early 2000s with personal narratives, has since evolved into more solidly constructed, visually composed images that engage with social themes—demonstrating the expanded potential of photography as a medium that fulfills both documentary and artistic expression.”
They also stated, “We hope that the selection of this year’s DongGang Photography Award winner—whose work diverges somewhat from that of past recipients—will make even a modest contribution to defining the contemporaneity and future-oriented direction of Korean photography.”
