In Reverse Cabinet, six participating artists take on the role of collectors, each presenting their own interpretations of “collection and display.” Based on his long-standing engagement with subculture, DON Sunpil observes how objects such as figures and merchandise reflect the ways in which popular culture and fine art shape the desire to collect. His work Portrait Fist focuses on the “face” imagery found in animation, examining how it encapsulates and conveys individual identity and personality, while also exploring the cultural meanings embedded within. In this way, his practice provokes reflection on the social phenomena surrounding the production and consumption, reproduction, and circulation of images in contemporary society.
