Right now, Daegu and Busan are awash in a sea of photographs.

At Gallery Toma in Daebong-dong, Daegu, a solo exhibition is underway until the 19th, showcasing Pixel, the late-period signature series of Hwang Gyutae, a pioneer of Korean avant-garde photography in the 1960s and 1970s. Co-curated by gallery director Yu Ji-sook and independent curator Lee Eun-sook, the exhibition presents pop art–inspired computer pixel images arranged to harmonize with the intimate, architectural sensibility of the small, hidden spaces throughout the venue.
