The solitude of Chun Kyungja and variations on character faces… A recharge of ‘intellectual sensibility.’

How about Prototype, the solo exhibition of artist Ok Seungcheol, who has explored the meaning and circulation of digital images through the form of the ‘character face’? On view until the 26th at the Lotte Museum in Seoul, the show presents more than 80 works. Visitors encounter countless ‘faces’—familiar yet uncanny, as if drawn from comics or games. These endlessly summoned and transformed faces take shape as monumental 2.8-meter sculptures, paintings that shift between two and three dimensions, and immersive installations. The exhibition also offers a glimpse into the context in which his works—widely discussed among subculture fans and the MZ generation—have emerged. The 1,322-square-meter (about 400-pyeong) space is fully utilized in its design. Standing in the cross-shaped corridor bathed in green light, one feels as if entering a virtual space in the process of loading.
