PARK Wunggyu’s solo exhibition Corpus Sutra transforms the pure painterly discourse of traditional Oriental painting into a language of impurity. Yukhwa (肉化) signifies a return to flesh and blood—that is, to the material body—while gyeong (經) refers to the Buddhist scriptures embodying order and practice. At the moment when impurity seeps into the place of the sublime, the authority of traditional painting is unsettled, and its concealed depths are revealed.
