“It has been 35 years since I settled in Hwaseong, yet this is my first exhibition in the region. Through this show, I hope to convey a sense of romance and contemplation to citizens leading difficult and demanding lives,” said artist Um Tai-jung (86), who is presenting the Hwaseong Foundation for Culture & Tourism’s special exhibition “Um Tai-jung Sculpture Exhibition – A Stranger's Poesie” at Dongtan Art Space and Dongtan Art Square through November 30. Um explained that the exhibition is not meant to promote himself but to share the beauty of Romanticism through his sculptures. Having settled in Hwaseong 35 years ago after establishing his studio there, he expressed that holding his first solo exhibition in the region carries deep personal significance. “As an artist and a public figure, I feel a moral responsibility to contribute to my community,” he said, adding, “This exhibition is an opportunity to present the artistic spirit of Romanticism to local citizens.” After retiring as a professor from the Department of Sculpture at Seoul National University, Um received the Order of Civil Merit, Green Stripes, in recognition of his artistic achievements. He is also a member of the National Academy of Arts of the Republic of Korea, where he continues to contribute to the advancement of national arts and culture.
Artist Um Tai-jung said, “I hope this exhibition allows visitors to experience both romance and reflection through art.”
