On October 6, PARK Youngsook, born in 1941 and widely regarded as a pioneering figure in Korean feminist photography, passed away at the age of eighty five. She began working with a camera while studying history at Sookmyung Womens University, where she was an active member of the Modern Photography Research Society.
In 2006, she founded Trunk Gallery in Samcheongdong, one of the few galleries in Korea dedicated entirely to photography. At the time, she explained that she opened the space to support younger photographers, noting that she felt it was unfortunate that photography was not yet recognized as an art form on the same level as painting. For a decade, she played a vital role in building the foundation needed to discover and support emerging photographic artists in Korea.
