A woman’s body is profoundly altered through the processes of pregnancy and childbirth, often pushed to physical and emotional extremes. Raising children can be as demanding as a battle, and the careers women have built over a lifetime are frequently disrupted or brought to a halt. Yet at the same time, giving birth to and raising a child can offer a form of happiness unlike anything else.
LEE Eunsil’s solo exhibition Surging Waves, currently on view at ARARIO GALLERY in Wonseo dong, Seoul, presents works that engage with this dual nature of childbirth. The artist, 42, translates onto canvas the experiences, emotions, and reflections she encountered while giving birth to her first child fourteen years ago and her second nine years ago.
