LEE Eunsil, Surging Waves

For a woman artist, childbirth is neither a hymn nor an elegy. Even so, she wanted, for the first time in this exhibition, to bring forward memories of childbirth that she had long kept tucked away in a drawer. LEE Eunsil peels back the shell of social conventions that have sealed childbirth within words such as “blessing” and “joy,” and instead summons landscapes filled with waves, lava, whirlpools, and mist. As suggested by the exhibition title, which likens major turning points in life to the height of waves, each canvas is brushed by surges of differing scale and speed as they pass across the body.
