이 작품은 다큐멘터리 잡지 『내셔널 지오그래픽(National Geographic)』에 게재된 새 두 마리가 날고 있는 사진 한 페이지를 좌측에 그대로 제시하고, 우측에는 거기서 읽어낸 단어들 (sky, cloud, wind, bird, flying 등)을 타이핑하여 무미건조하게 나열한다. 사진 기표와 언어 기표의 배치는 사진 속 한 쌍의 새가 함께 노는 상황 전체를 언어 기표가 사로잡을 수 없음을 암시하며, 두 기표 사이의 엇나감과 함께 기표와 기의 사이 의미의 균열을 의미한다. 이 작품은 최병소의 의자 사진과 함께 최병소의 초기 1970년대 작품 중 남아있는 두 작품 중 하나이다. 당시 그의 스튜디오를 방문한 이론가들 사이에서는 최병소 작가의 1970년대 작품 중 매우 중요한 개념적 작업이라고 알려져 있다.
Untitled is a work that combines a photograph of two flying birds from the “National Geographic” with text typed by the artist. Words corresponding to the image of two flying birds: ‘sky’, ‘cloud’, ‘wind’, ‘birds’, ‘flying’, ‘meeting’ are listed in juxtaposition. The arrangement of the signified both in the photograph and text implies that language cannot capture the entire situation and indicates the rift between the two signified factors, with the separation in meaning between the signified and the signifier. This work, along with the set of four photographs of chairs, is one of two remaining works from the early 1970s. Critics who visited the artist’s studio at the time agreed that among the works from the 1970s, Untitled was a significant piece of conceptual art.
