Kim Soungui is a multi-media artist based in France and Korea. Creating works working in both countries, Kim’s art-making process is inspired by the philosophies and media of the East and West. Exhibited at her retrospective at MMCA Korea (2019), “Saekdong Mandala” is made with the multi-layered color textile made in Korean traditional fabric, called Saekdong. Saekdong fabric symbolizes the color bar on television monitors highlighting her continuous interest in new media technology. On top of the fabric, she painted a cloud with Korean traditional ink, portraying the artist’s attitude of living like the clouds, roaming freely on top of busy and complicated contemporary world. Finding creative impulses from laziness, she was able to discover the essence of life, infinitely open possibility. This work is conceived after her collaborative work with Paik Nam June in 1984, underlining the intellectual exchange among the experimental artists during the era.
