Press release

Arario Gallery Shanghai is thrilled to present a groundbreaking duo exhibition “Tim Garwood and Daisy Parris” of new and recent artworks by British artists Tim GARWOOD(b. 1984 Epsom, UK) and Daisy PARRIS(b. 1993, Kent, UK), which runs from June 30 to August 31, 2023. Marking the London-based artists’ first major show presenting together with Arario Gallery in China, the duo exhibition showcases a range of artistic mediums, encompassing PARRIS's vibrant paintings and GARWOOD's mesmerizing glass works with neon installations. This eclectic presentation invites viewers to embark on a multidimensional journey, demonstrating a unique balance between two very distinct bodies of work, and fostering a deeper understanding of the evolving landscape of contemporary art.

As an intuitive and quick-thinking artist, Tim GARWOOD's works are driven by a love and passion for color, texture, and materials. And they are often characterized by a conversation between the materials, including oil paint, acrylic, spray paint, ink, glitter, neon, British stamps, IKEA tablecloths, tape measures, lace curtains, and exquisite and flawless glass surfaces.

GARWOOD has pushed the boundaries of the use of glass, both in terms of methodology and its poetic potential in multiple dimensions, in tandem with his investigations in painting as one of a kind. His artistic approach is highly ambitious and experimental in nature, to the extent that he allows himself to follow instincts and sail in unexpected directions. This absolute freedom is of the utmost importance for forming new ideas and more possibilities in which he has incorporated dynamic neon lighting onto some of the paintings, giving the works additional dimension and character.

Consistently, GARWOOD uses artist-specified frames, and each frame is adorned with glitter, translating feelings of excitement and nostalgia into each piece of his work. Despite the visual connection between GARWOOD's works and landscapes, gardens, flowers, and nature, there is no common thread underlying his creative practice. Ultimately, There is always a collection of intricate details hidden beneath the layers of colors, marks, and materials to give the viewer an opportunity to connect the inspiring details with their thoughts and experiences.

Daisy PARRIS creates a psychological space where the paintings operate in a profoundly intimate and personal manner, with the paintings presenting a captivating interplay between broad brushstrokes, nuanced color palettes, and evocative imagery in terms of their dynamic composition.

As a core component of PARRIS's artistic practice, each piece is an immersive and intimate experience with a great balance between love and hope, violence and death, grief and loss, vulnerability and power, where brushstrokes are sometimes rough sometimes tender. Each piece invites viewers to engage with the art on multiple levels, carrying us along through moments of reflection, battles, struggles, and triumphs for personal liberation, and ultimately swallows us up beyond our awareness and understanding.

In addition to the visual resonance of the paintings, the texts on them evoke emotional resonance as they take the form of poetry, monologues, fragments of daily observations, and diaries. As part of an internal dialogue, they discuss death, love, and human relationships, highlighting how we live in a fleeting moment, feelings, and reflection in the sense of nostalgia, which we often forget or bury in the mundane world of memories, experiences, and time. Therefore, PARRIS invites the viewer into a meditation session in which one can contemplate the complexities of life and be found in a state of “Love and Peace” regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or background.

Together, PARRIS and GARWOOD create a dynamic visual dialogue between PARRIS's emotive canvas paintings and GARWOOD's luminous glass paintings with neon, as the two artists engage in an artistic conversation that bridges traditional and contemporary techniques within the exhibition space. This duo exhibition is not only an exciting display of artistic collaboration but also a testament to the evolving nature of contemporary art. It highlights the significance of interdisciplinary encounters, where the two distinct artistic approaches intertwine and amplify one another to challenge established conventions. By bringing together their unique perspectives, GARWOOD and PARRIS encourage viewers to reexamine preconceived notions and explore the transformative power of art.
