[News] Promise of Culture Artist [2024 New Year Special]

Born in 1938, UM Tai-Jung was fascinated by the materiality of iron while studying at Seoul National University, and devoted his life to metal sculptures. In 1967, when his artwork "Scream," made with iron welding techniques, won the Prime Minister's Award at the 16th National Exhibition, he attracted attention as a writer, and for the past half century, he has been sticking to metal sculptures such as iron, copper, and aluminum with his craftsmanship.

It is not easy even for senior artists to handle a few tons of metal and to refine themselves and cultivate their minds to be fully present as artists. However, the 85-year-old artist UM is still on the road to active duty. "Meeting a new world that I haven't seen before through the art world. I feel like I'm achieving healing time through work," he said.

This year, works of special meaning will be held not only for him but also for the domestic art world. He will participate as a senior Korean artist in symposiums and exhibitions related to Brancusi.
