A Surrealist Art Stroll in the Heart of Seoul

As Surrealism—an artistic movement that seeks the free flow of the human psyche through dreams, the unconscious, and chance—continues to evolve in Korean art, a new wave of interest is emerging. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung, is currently drawing attention with its exhibition Surrealism and Korean Modern Art, which sheds new light on forgotten 20th-century Korean surrealist painters. Just a ten-minute walk away, inside the Heungkuk Life Insurance Building, another exhibition showcases how 21st-century contemporary artists—several generations younger—are embracing surrealist tendencies in their own way. That exhibition is Drifting Worlds: Bed, Bath, Bus, presented by the Taekwang Group’s Sehwa Museum of Art.
