GWON Osang began working with photography as a new material during his university years, following his reflections on the idea of “light sculpture.” His three meter tall work Mounted Police is modeled on mounted police officers who were deployed to control football hooligans in Manchester, England. Confronted with a horse more than one and a half times the size of an ordinary one, the artist was overwhelmed by its scale. When photographing the horse’s hindquarters, he had to rely on a zoom lens from a distance, wary of the possibility of being kicked. As the prolonged shoot continued, the horse grew bored, yet even when circling the training ground, it remained aware of the camera directed at it. The horse’s gaze, as persistent as the artist’s own, was captured in more than three thousand shutter clicks.
