Entering “Another Space,” Forgotten Women Artists Come Into View A History of “Environment” Before Installation Art

Long recognized as part of the first generation of Korean avant-garde art, JUNG Kangja is newly positioned here as the first Korean woman artist to experiment with environmental art. When visitors step inside the black curtained space, a siren sounds and smoke fills the room. A light suddenly falls across the startled viewer’s face, followed by the artist’s voice announcing, “You are now inside my work.” Suggesting the tense atmosphere of the time, the piece is being presented to audiences again for the first time since it was dismantled during its exhibition in 1970.
