Born in 1997, LIM Subeom presents 62 paintings and ceramic works. A mirage is an illusion that can be seen but cannot be reached, representing the gap between seeing and knowing. Drawing inspiration from the mural paintings of the Gangseo Great Tomb of the Goguryeo Kingdom, the artist incorporates the imagery of the Four Guardian Deities: the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise. The Four Guardian Deities are guardian gods to those within the boundaries they protect, yet they may appear as fearsome monsters to those outside. Through this duality, the artist asks whether the distinctions between gods and monsters, self and other, and inside and outside are truly as clear as they seem.
