Press release

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Liu Jianhua has used all kinds of Chinese-style apparel as a leitmotif in his work, from Sun Yat-Sen jackets and double-breasted suits to cheongsam. He uses ceramics to sculpt his miniature figures in exotic poses, hand-sculpting every fold of clothes and flexing muscles. He expresses himself almost exclusively in the language of sculpture. He made a large ceramic sculpture installation work, featuring items like soap, toys, shoes, phones etc., in white china which was exhibited in the 50th La Biennale di Venezia Chinese Pavilion. In the Biennale, the daily objects were hung around the three walls and the pillow-shaped sculpture suspending in the center of the installation.
