Experimental Artist HWANG Gyutae Pushes Beyond the Boundaries of Photography at 88

People encountering the work of HWANG Gyutae (88), often described as a pioneer of Korean experimental photography, are usually surprised at least twice. First, they are struck by the fact that the vibrant rhythm and color of the works before them belong not to painting, but to photography. Then comes another surprise: the artist, who has been working with digital images since the late 1990s, is now in his eighties. Before HWANG Gyutae, fixed ideas about genre and conventional assumptions about age seem to lose much of their meaning.
