Leeum Museum of Art and Bottega Veneta’s Strange Playground

One of the most striking moments in the exhibition is Korean artist JUNG Kangja’s Non-Physical Exhibition. The moment visitors step into the space enclosed by black curtains, unexpected events unfold before there is even time to process them. A siren sounds, smoke spreads through the room, and beams of light pour onto the bewildered faces of the audience. Then the artist’s voice echoes through the space: “You are now inside my work.”

Combining light, sound, and tactile elements, the work expanded the way art could be experienced and is said to have reflected the social atmosphere of the 1970s. At the time, however, it was forcibly dismantled by the government on accusations of encouraging political agitation. Through extensive research and historical reconstruction, the vanished space from more than half a century ago has now been faithfully restored.
