On the afternoon of August 20, 1970, artist Jeong Gang-ja staged an exhibition titled Muchejeon (無體展, “Exhibition Without Substance”) at the National Public Information Center. She enclosed the exhibition space with black curtains and played the loud sound of an air raid siren. Despite the title suggesting the absence of physical substance, visitors who stepped into the square space behind the curtains were startled as they found themselves surrounded by pale dry ice fog creeping across the floor. The blaring siren, which seemed to pierce the chest and set the heart racing, was a sound deeply embedded in the everyday lives of citizens at the time, constantly reminding them of the pressures of the era.
