Munwha Magazine: JUNG Kangja

Hwang Myung Yeol, Munwha Magazine, 15 December 2023

Arario Gallery Seoul in Wonseo-dong will hold an exhibition "It Has Always Been The Beginning" until December 30, focusing on the paintings of the late JUNG Kangja (1942~2017), a pioneer of experimental art.

The exhibition will showcase 40 paintings produced from 1995 to 2010 as part of efforts to reevaluate the world of works by JUNG Kangja (1942~2017), a first-generation Korean performance artist. Exotic yet surreal paintings such as "The Universe Through Knitting" (1996), "Spider" (1995), and "Untitled" (1997) are notable. The paintings are from the 1990s, reflecting the inspiration that the artist got while traveling around the world, including Latin America, Africa, Southwest Asia, and the South Pacific. The works from the 2000s show traces of geometric experiments that attempted to explain everything in the shape of a semicircle. "Woman Floating in a Forest" (2010) is a representative example.
